IAS Preliminary & Mains Exam Syllabus
In the below section of this page, we are giving IAS Syllabus 2017 for Preliminary exam and main exam. Preliminary Exam consist 2 papers i.e. Paper 1 and Paper 2.
IAS Preliminary Exam
Paper 1:
  • History of India and Indian national movement
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization General Science.
  • Indian and world geography- Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
  • Indian politics and governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Current events of national and international importance
  • Economic and social development Ecology- – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
Paper 2:
  • Comprehension
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • General mental ability
  • English language comprehension skills
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. – Class X level).
IAS Main Exam:
in the beneath segment of this page, we are providing IAS Syllabus for main exam. Main examination consist 2 paper i.e. paper A and paper B. In paper A, there are 2 parts and In Paper B there is 7 parts.
Paper A:
Paper I:  Any Indian Language
In this, candidates have to choose one language from Languages which included in Eighth Schedule of Constitution. This exam is not compulsory for candidates who are from States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim.
Paper II: English
Purpose of this paper is to test candidate’s skills to read and understand serious discursive prose, and to express his thoughts correctly, in English and concerned Indian Language.
Pattern of questions would be mostly as follows:-
  • Comprehension of given passages
  • Precis Writing
  • Usage and Vocabulary
Paper B:
PaperSubjectTopics
IIIEssayCandidates will require writing an essay on a specific topic. Choice of subjects will be given. They will be expected to keep closely to topic of essay to assemble their ideas in orderly and to write in brief.
IVGeneral Studies 1
  • (Indian Heritage/Culture, World History & Geography)
  • Indian culture will cover the salient aspects of Art Forms, Literature and Architecture from ancient to modern times.
  • Modern Indian history from about the middle of the eighteenth century until the present- significant events, personalities, issues
  • The Freedom Struggle – its various stages and important contributors /contributions from different parts of the country.
  • Post-independence consolidation and reorganization within the country
VGeneral Studies 2
  • (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations)
  •  Indian culture will cover the salient aspects of Art Forms, Literature and Architecture from ancient to modern times.
  • Modern Indian history from about the middle of the eighteenth century until the present- significant events, personalities, issues
  • The Freedom Struggle – its various stages and important contributors /contributions from different parts of the country.
  • Post-independence consolidation and reorganization within the country
VIGeneral Studies 3
  • (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-Diversity, Environment, Security & Disaster Management)
  • Inclusive growth and issues arising from it.
  • Development, Bio diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management.
  • Government Budgeting.
  • Indian Economy and issues relating to planning, mobilization of resources, growth, development and employment.
VIIGeneral Studies 4
  • (Ethics, Integrity & Aptitude)
  • Ethics and Human Interface: Essence, determinants and consequences of Ethics in human actions; dimensions of ethics; ethics in private and public relationships.
  • Attitude: content, structure, function; its influence and relation with thought and behaviour; moral and political attitudes; social influence and persuasion.
  • Human Values – lessons from the lives and teachings of great leaders, reformers and administrators; role of family, society and educational institutions in inculcating values.
VIII and IXOptional 1 (Of your choice)/ Optional 2 (Of your choice)
  • Botany, Economics, General Studies, Geography, Management, Philosophy, Public Administration
  • Agriculture, Chemistry, Medical science, Electrical Engineering, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Sociology, Statistics, Law, Essays, Commerce & Accountancy and Psychology
Important Notice: For paper VIII and IX, Candidates can select any ONE optional subject from amongst list of subjects provided above.

c) Interview Test:
Aspirants who will qualify both Preliminary and Main exam will be called for Interview. Interview test will be of 275 marks.
